Linking Content

Content only reaches your customers once it's linked to something they bought.

  • Product/Variant link. The content is delivered on every order for that product or variant, including orders placed before you linked it. This is the usual choice: link a file to a product once, and every customer who bought it gets it.
  • Line Item link. The content is delivered on a single line item of a single order. Use it for one-off content, like a custom file for one customer, or a replacement for someone with a problem. See Custom Products.

A Product/Variant link already covers every order of that product, so you never need both for the same content. See Duplicate Links.

Linking

Links work in both directions, and in bulk:

  • From a product: link one or more pieces of content to it.
  • From a piece of content: link it to one or more products.
  • Many at once: select several products, or several pieces of content, and link them together.
  • On an order: link content to one line item, while editing the order.

Adding new content from a product or an order links it there automatically.

Seeing what's linked

  • A product lists all its content, including content linked to individual orders of it, with the order each one belongs to.
  • A piece of content lists every product, variant and line item it's linked to.
  • An order lists the content each line item delivers, and whether it comes from the product or was linked to that order only.

Each link also shows whether customers can get the content through it, and if not, why. See Content Status.

tip

To find content that isn't linked to anything yet, filter your content library for content with no linked products and no linked line items.

Unlinking

  • Unlinking a Product/Variant link removes the content from every order for that product or variant, including past orders.
  • Unlinking a Line Item link only affects that one order.

You can't unlink a Product/Variant link from a single order, because the same link delivers the content on every order of that product. To take it away from one customer, revoke their access to it instead.

To stop delivering content everywhere without removing its links, disable it. See Disabling and Deleting Content.
