Adding License Keys

Each Download & License product has its own pool of keys. When an order is paid, the app assigns one key from the pool for every unit sold. Add keys from the License Keys page, or from the product itself, by pasting them in, one per line.

Things to know

  • The product must be a configured Download & License product. Set it up first. See Configuring a Product.
  • Keys belong to one product. Each key is added to a single product or variant, and can't be shared between products.
  • Spaces count. Everything on a line is the key, spaces included, so ABCD 1234 and ABCD1234 are different keys. Check your list for stray spaces before pasting.
  • Duplicates are skipped. A key that's already in the product's pool isn't added again, and you're told how many were skipped. To stop the same key being used in different products too, turn on Key Uniqueness.
  • You can record where they came from. Add details such as the supplier or invoice number, and they're saved with every key in that batch. See License Key Metadata.

After you add keys

  • They're ready straight away. The next paid order takes its keys from the new stock.
  • Orders that went without keys get them. If orders came in while the pool was empty, the nightly sync assigns them keys from the new stock. See When You Run Out of Keys.
  • Your Shopify inventory updates, if Auto Sync Inventory is on.

Giving one customer a key

To give a specific customer a key directly, for example as a replacement, edit their order. You can pick one of the product's available keys, or type a new key to add it to your inventory and assign it in one step.
