Key History
Every license key keeps a complete record of its life, so you can always answer where a key has been, and who has seen it.
What's recorded
- Every change to the key: when it was assigned, returned, restocked, edited or deleted, the order involved, and who or what made the change.
- Its reveal log: every time the customer on its current order revealed it, with the date, how they were signed in, and their IP address, operating system and browser.
- Running totals: how many orders it's been assigned to, and how many times it's been returned and restocked.
The reveal log is often your best evidence in a dispute: it shows that the customer received their key, and when. See Customer Activity.
Who changed a key
Each change records who or what made it:
| Recorded as | Means |
|---|---|
| Order Paid | Assigned when the customer's order was paid. |
| Return Webhook | Changed by a Shopify return. |
| Refund Webhook | Changed by a Shopify refund. |
| Chargeback | Changed because the customer opened a dispute. |
| Admin User | Changed by someone on your team. |
| System Process | Changed by the app's own sync. |
Things to know
- Restocking clears the reveal log, so the next customer starts fresh. The change itself stays in the history.
- Deleted keys keep their history and reveal log. See Deleting License Keys.
- You can delete individual entries, such as test reveals you made yourself. Deleted entries can't be recovered.
- To keep a copy, export your keys: the file includes each key's full history and reveal log.
