Returning and Restocking Keys
Returning and restocking both take a key away from a customer, but they're not the same:
| Return | Restock | |
|---|---|---|
| The customer | Can no longer see the key. | Can no longer see the key. |
| The key | Stays attached to their order. | Is removed from their order. |
| Your pool | Unchanged. The key won't be sold again. | The key goes back in the pool, ready for the next order. |
| Reveal log | Kept. | Cleared, so the next customer starts fresh. |
| Undo | Undo the return to give it back to the customer. | Assign it to them again by editing their order. |
When the app does it for you
You rarely need to do either by hand. When an order is returned, refunded or disputed, the app returns the affected keys, and restocks the ones it safely can:
- Auto Restock Inventory is on, for your store or the product,
- the customer never revealed the key, and
- the order was placed after you installed the app.
See Returns, Refunds & Chargebacks.
Doing it yourself
You can return, undo a return, or restock a single key, many keys at once, or keys on an order while editing it alongside other changes, such as assigning a replacement. When you change many keys at once, only the ones that qualify are changed, and you see which before you confirm.
Things to know
- You can restock a revealed key by hand, but be careful. The customer may already be using it, so the next customer could get a key that doesn't work. Its reveal log, often your evidence in a dispute, is also cleared.
- Changing keys by hand turns off order reconciliation for that order, so the daily sync doesn't undo your change. See Order Reconciliation.
- Restocking updates your Shopify inventory, if Auto Sync Inventory is on.
- Returned keys you could restock are counted as Restockable Keys on each product. See Statistics.
